Natural Fertilizers & Insecticides

Summer is finally here and its time to enjoy the garden and relax whiles the kids and pets run around the yard. However to have this nice yard you need fertilizers and to enjoy the outside without the bugs you need bug sprays and unfortunately those are both harmful to us. Since when did gardening become so dangerous?

Rather than waste any more money at the garden center, there are some great alternatives to keeping your lawn green and your family healthy. Of course there is no one miracle recipe that does it all but there are a lot of recipes for natural fertilizers and insecticides out there. I even discovered genuine organic products ranging from fertilizer (for those of you who don’t want to mix your own) to beneficial nematodes, a natural way to rid your garden of pests.

Simple Fertilizer Recipes

Coffee:

Use leftover coffee to water the plants. However, make sure to dilute it before using it. You can make use of this ratio one part of coffee to 4 parts of water. You can use the solution once every other week.

Coffee grounds:

Line a metal tray with newspapers and spread used coffee grounds evenly on the paper not more than 1/4 inch.  After the grounds are dry, put them directly on the soil around the plants. Eggshells: Eggshells provide a rich source of potassium and calcium. Make powdered eggshell fertilizer by drying out empty eggshells. Put five crushed eggshells into the soil around every plant. It is the best fertilizer for outdoor flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

Simple Safe Insecticide:

Soak in water the following: lemon peels and/or orange peels, mint leaves and/or sage leaves, lavender leaves. If you can soak them overnight and in the morning you’ll have a strong “tea.” Strain this and use half of this mixture and add witch hazel to make up the other half and put in a spray bottle. Simply lightly spray yourself down with this mixture and shall be good to go and you will be smelling nice rather than dealing with that awful OFF smell. :-)

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you awesome MOM’s!

I hope you all enjoy your special day!  Here is a great poem that truly signifies to me what being a MOM is all about! :-)

BEFORE I WAS A MOM

Before I was a Mom;
I made and ate hot meals,
I had unstained clothing,
I brushed my hair every day,
I had quiet conversations on the phone,
I slept as late as I wanted and I slept all night long.

Before I was a Mom;
I cleaned my house each day,
I never tripped over toys or forgot lullabies,
I didn’t worry whether or not my plants were poisonous,
I had never been puked on, pooped on, spit on, chewed on, peed on, or
pinched by tiny fingers.

Before I was a Mom;
I never thought about immunizations,
I never held a screaming child so the doctors could give shots,
I never looked into teary eyes and cried,
I never felt my heart break into pieces when I couldn’t stop the hurt,
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.

Before I was a Mom;
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn’t want to put it down,
I never sat up late hours of the night watching a baby sleep,
I never got up in the middle of the night to make sure everything was okay,
I didn’t know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.

Before I was a Mom;
I had complete control of my mind, my thoughts and my body,
I didn’t know the feeling of having my heart outside of my body,
I didn’t know that having something so small could make me feel so
important,
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache,
the wonderment, or the satisfaction of being a mom.

Before I was a Mom;
I never knew that something so small could effect my life so much,
I never knew that I could love someone so much,
I never knew I would love being a Mom,
I didn’t know the bond between a Mother and her child,
I didn’t know I was capable of feeling so much.

Best Foods To Stockpile for an Emergency

Natural Disasters happen and whether you’re preparing for a hurricane, blizzard, or the zombie apocalypse.  Here are some of the best foods and items to have on hand for just in “case”.

In your stockpile you should include high-energy, high-protein foods, since you might need to expend more energy during an emergency than you normally would. The items recommended on their food supply list have long expiration dates: peanut butter, for example, and, of course, canned meats and vegetables (don’t forget the can opener!). Also if you can include basic seasoning and sweeteners to make your food taste better and multivitamins to help replace nutrients you may not be able to get.

The article offers a bunch of helpful tips, such as choosing individually packaged cereals so they don’t become stale after opening and keeping a can of Sterno handy to warm up foods indoors. Also remember to check expiration dates in your stockpile every year or twice a year.

This is a great list here for the Best Foods to Stockpile for an Emergency!

What other items might you add to the list?

10 Things to Tell Your Daughter Before She Turns 10

10 Things to Tell Your Daughter Before She Turns 10

My little girl is 6 years old.  I love her with everything in me and it seems like yesterday she was just a baby and I thought these days would last forever.  Her 7 year old birthday is just around the corner and she seems more and more grown up each and every day.  It is now no longer “cool” for mom to pick out her clothes at the store.  :(

This is just one of the many things I miss and am now cherishing each of the “little girl” thing she still does. I pray each night for her to be confident and know that she is beautiful inside and out.  I found this on Pinterest and absolutely LOVED it and wanted to share with all of you if you have a little girl as well.  I would love to make these into a book and give it to her as a gift for her 10th birthday! :-)

10 Things to Tell Your Daughter Before She Turns 10

1. It is not your job to keep the people you love happy.  Not me, not Daddy, not your brother, not your friends.  I promise, it’s not.  The hard truth is that you can’t, anyway.

2. Your physical fearlessness is a strength. Please continue using your body in the world: run, jump, climb, throw.  I love watching you streaking down the soccer field, or swinging proudly along a row of monkey bars, or climbing into the high branches of a tree.  There is both health and a sense of mastery in physical activity and challenges.

3. You should never be afraid to share your passions. You are sometimes embarrassed that you still like to play with dolls, for example, and you worry that your friends will make fun of you.  Anyone who teases you for what you love to do is not a true friend.  This is hard to realize, but essential.

DIY Detox Bath

DIY Detox Bath

It’s that time of year, little sunshine, it’s cold outside and many of us are running ourselves and feeling just plain worn out and sluggish. We are also exposed daily to toxins  from the environment, foods we eat, and it’s just not something we can easily avoid.  Over time our body starts to lose it’s immunity and we just start to feel just plain crummy!

A Detox Bath will draw impurities out of your body, clear out your pores, clear the brain fog and leave you feeling rejuvenated the next day.

Here is an excellent DIY Detox Bath Recipe:

  • 2 cups Epsom Salt-this draws out toxins from your body while relieving aches and pains
  • 1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar – soothes and softens dry, itchy skin while balances the bodies and neutralizing the bodies pH.
  • 5-10 drops of your favorite Essential Oil – lavender, geranium, sandalwood are all known for their relaxing and detoxing properties.
  • Soak for 20-40 minutes

epsomsalts_bath

Once you are done be sure to drink a large cup of water to continue to help your body flush the toxins and replace fluids.  It is best to do this right before bed as you will feel worn out after this bath.  You will sleep like a baby and wake feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world!  :-)
